  • In 1900- African-American painter Henry O Tanner was one of the 6,916 American exhibitors at the Paris Exposition, winning a silver medal for his entry
  • In 1922- Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority founded at Butler University
  • In 1941- Madame Lillian Evanti founds the National Negro Opera Company
  • In 1977- Springarn Medal awarded to Alexander P. Haley (author of ROOTS) for his unsurpassed effectiveness in portraying the legendary story of an American of African descent.
  • In 2019- Steven Reed is sworn-in as the first African American mayor of the City of Montgomery, AL in it's 200 year history
